I like them a lot. I see one every once in a while with a big visor like that, and a taller front bumper. It’s black, grey, and white, and udually the most badass thing on the highway. Oh and it has massive straight stacks like that blue one. I don't think I'd want to drive a semi, but the old ones sure as hell look cool

78 Freightliner cabover was my work truck for a few years. Lots of miles and 2 electrical fires later I was glad to move into another job. Hard working truck though, in spite of the threats.

I always thought cabovers were the coolest trucks. It’s a damn shame that they went out of style in North America.

I agree, I guess space just hasn’t been that much of an issue as it is in Europe. Lots of little cabover box trucks in the city at least, some of those look cool. There's a could big old Volvo cabovers running around still

I was really in to semis when I was 8/9 years old (who wasn’t?) and I can just barely remember seeing and losing my mind over an old White-Freigtliner cabover in West Virginia during a family vacation.
I still have a major soft spot for older, by now obscure semi manufacturers. I freaked out when I saw a Marmon earlier this year...

I have no idea what a Marmon even is, I guess I’ve gotta read up more on obscure trucks

I wasn’t trying on one-up or anything on weird truck knowledge! Cabovers are kinda weird and rare on the roads anymore, and your post reminded me of my old obsession with strange old trucks

Oh I didn't think you were, it just piqued my interest for obscurity. Yeah I'm happy to see people that are keeping them going

My dad runs a small fleet and I’ve been trying to convince him for years to buy an old White cab over or any other old truck with a 5th wheel to use as a switcher for yard duty but also for the occasional local run, like across the county to the CRTS dealer for trailer service, so we don’t have to take one of the OTR sleepers out of service for a day just to move an empty 50 miles.
I was thinking it could also carry my grandpa’s old truck livery (can’t find any pictures right now) and we could use it in little town parades.
But alas, he has enough on his hand with the fleet as it is, doesn’t need me pushing for old heaps to sit around the yard.

Oh that would be a very cool thing, but I get not wanting to put more on his plate. That reminds me of the 1936 Ford dump truck in my family. My grandpa bought it because it was identical to his dad’s fleet he had to trucking up the Alaska highway in the 30s and 40s. So it’s painted like his old trucks, with a reproduction sign on one side, and an old original sign on the other. Love that truck

I need to get some pictures of the old trucks next time I go home. It’s like a cool 80s triangle design. I actually adapted it into A power point template.

I recall seeing modern extants in Germany in 2000 and I've wondered what led to their near extinction in the US? Was it the just the complicated logistics of popping the cab to get to the engine (especially as sleepers became bigger and bigger)?

I think a combination of truck length laws going away, and the complexity of tilting the cab, as well as less noise and vibration for the driver with a normal layout
